                                                            DON STECKEL
                                                              Inducted 1988

Don Steckel was an outspoken critic of the lack of recreation and boat launching facilities on the Missouri River and Lake Sakakawea.  His constructive criticism caused many diverse groups to come together – both private and governmental – to reach solutions.
He spent many days searching for and locating suitable sites for boat launching and recreational areas.  He then worked tirelessly with various groups, including park boards, county and city commissioners, and state agencies, to make these facilities become reality.
Steckel was the founding organizer of the Bis-Man Reel and Rec Club, whose purpose was also to promote more launching facilities on the Missouri River.  This group is the largest fishing club in the state and holds many fishing related events each year.
To honor the man who hard work benefited many people, the boat ramp west of Wilton on the Missouri River was dedicated and named after Don Steckel.
