FRED RYCKMAN

Fred Ryckman, a district fisheries biologist at Williston, is credited with pioneering North Dakota Game and Fish Department programs to continue development of paddlefish reproduction in the Missouri River. His research and work with the giant fish is viewed as among the most concise and productive of any that has been undertaken. Ryckman was instrumental in compiling data on existing numbers of fish and methods of aiding natural reproduction later used to establish a program of hatchery raised fish for stocking, a program which allowed retention of good numbers of paddlefish in the Yellowstone and Missouri River waters.
Later in his career, Ryckman established and maintained fisheries on smaller lakes and rivers in northwestern North Dakota. Prior to his transfer to the Williston region, Ryckman was in charge of the department’s statewide fisheries development program, which then included construction of many new boat ramps and angler related facilities on Lakes Sakakawea, Audubon, and Oahe.
