JERRY RAFFERTY
Inducted 1989
An avid outdoorsman and angler, Rafferty is known as one of the most widely read outdoor writers from the Midwest. Prior to his retirement as an outdoor writer for the Fargo Forum, Rafferty devoted countless columns to the promotion of sportfishing in the state and region. His columns and articles both educated and entertained his readers. His reports on Lake Sakakawea were responsible for creating major awareness of that lake in the rest of the Midwest and the nation.
Rafferty was a major advocate of catch-and-release fishing, and conserving the resource for future use. This conservation message was continually brought across in his columns; it was a message that at the time was not well understood nor practiced.
To thousands of anglers, Rafferty’s weekly column in the Sunday Fargo Forum was a map to planning fishing trips around North Dakota.
