BILL MITZEL
Inducted 1991
Bill Mitzel of Bismarck is a well-known angler and outdoor writer and outdoor magazine publisher. Mitzel’s love of the outdoors started at a young age and continued to develop until, as an adult, he made the decision to also make it his career.
Mitzle fished many of the fishing tournaments in North Dakota, as well as in other states. He won many of these tournaments at least once, include the ND Governor’s Walleye Cut and Devils Lake Walleye Tournament. As an experienced tournament angler, he has also given many seminars. Mitzel has caught a wide variety of ND Game and Fish whoppers and is one of only a handful of anglers who have caught more than five species among the region’s anglers.
Mitzel is probably best known for his outdoor writing. He not only educated anglers on what is new in fishing techniques, but he has written extensively about conservation practices, such as catch-and-release, selective harvest, fishing small underfished waters, fishing species other than walleyes to take pressure off that species, and similar issues. Not afraid to “ruffle feathers”, Mitzel has at times written articles that deal with issues that are controversial and emotional.
