LEE KLAPPRODT
Inducted 2004
Often called “Mr. Salmon” by his peers, Bismarck’s Lee Klapprodt developed an early interest in pursuing Chinook salmon which made him among the top salmon anglers in the upper Midwest. As an employee of the ND State Water Commission, Lee had a keen interest in water quality and its relationship to the sport fishery. That interest was furthered with the introduction of salmon into Lake Sakakawea in the 1980’s.
Klapprodt was quick to the learn the habits of the salmon and equally quick to share that knowledge with other fishermen. He almost single-handedly promoted the pursuit of the big fish, disbursing his knowledge of salmon on a weekly radio show. He secured the support of numerous sponsors to implement a mail-in postcard campaign in which anglers mailed the results of their favorite fishing efforts to him for compiling and release on his radio shows. He aired reports of fishing hotspots, bait, and lure success.
