Inducted 2024
Joyce is a resident of Garrison and promotes sportfishing in North Dakota through her continuing commitment to the North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup fishing tournament. Joyce has been involved with the tournament for 40 years and has contributed thousands of hours of dedicated effort. Her initial involvement was to collect prizes for tournament participants and through the years she assumed increasing responsibilities as a tournament committee member, ultimately becoming chairperson. She has served as chairperson of the tournament since 2005. Through her activities involving tournament preparation as well as during the tournament itself, Joyce has many interactions with tournament competitors and they often express appreciation for the personal touch that Joyce provides and have developed personal friendships with her.
The North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup is the largest fishing tournament in the state and is considered by many to be the premier fishing tournament in North Dakota. The tournament currently consists of 262 two-person teams involving anglers of all ages and many teams consist of family members, such as a parent and child or husband and wife. The tournament routinely fills in the first days that applications are accepted. Joyce is dedicated to ensuring the tournament provides a positive experience for all the participants. Competitors not only receive an opportunity to interact with fellow anglers in formal competition, but also benefit from learning and improving their angling skills.
The tournament is held annually and occurs over two days in July, however, Joyce works year-round on all the details that are required to successfully conduct a tournament of this size and stature. While Joyce serves as the chairperson, she humbly gives credit for success of the tournament to other committee members and volunteers. Not only does the tournament provide an opportunity for over 500 anglers to participate in an outstanding event, it also provides a direct economic benefit to the community of Garrison. The accompanying tournament weigh-in held in the Garrison City Park also provides entertainment and a family oriented social event for community members and relatives and friends of the competitors. Conservation funds generated by tournament fees have also provided a direct benefit to many sportfishing projects in the Garrison area.
Joyce’s dedication to the North Dakota Governor’s Walleye Cup fishing tournament is obvious and her thousands of hours of effort accompanied by her friendly, personal touch has ensured the continuing success of the tournament. Her commitment to the tournament while ensuring a positive experience for all involved has provided significant benefit to sportfishing in North Dakota.
