                                                              DALE HENEGAR
                                                                 Inducted 1981

Dale Heneger of Bismarck was the first full-time biologist hired by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, as well as becoming the first Fisheries Division Chief.  He began his career in 1949 and was department commissioner from 1981to 1989.
Heneger began his lifelong career by first inventorying the state’s waters to determine the number, condition and future prospects for each body of water as it related to fisheries potential.  He then began programs to improve water quality and/or stock fish into these bodies of water.  He developed the salmonid and trout program to fill that void.  In trying to fill another void in the state’s waters, Dale initiated the European Zander program.
During the mid and late 1980’s, Dale, along with several other individuals, provided the leadership which led to the expansion of the National Fish Hatchery at Riverdale.  He is also credited with developing a methodology for hatching and rearing northern pike with serves as the standard to this day.
