Louis (Louie) Gaukler
Inducted 2013
Louis (Louie) Gaukler of Cayuga is well known for his efforts to improve fishing in southeast North Dakota and his passion for conservation of natural resources. He is a lifelong famer who is an avid angler and hunter. His efforts and involvement concerning natural resource issues has at times placed him at odds with fellow farmers.
Louie has served as secretary of the Lake Region Wildlife club. Most recently, Louie was instrumental in the formation of the Southeast Area Sportsmen, an umbrella group for a large number of local wildlife clubs representing members from Richland, Sargent, Ransom, and Dickey counties. The Southeast Area Sportsmen have been instrumental in installing ramps and docks at various area lakes. They have also assisted in the establishment of fishable lakes through efforts such as transferring stunted perch and baitfish in cooperation with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department. Due to these efforts, the number of fishable lakes in the area has increased from two to over a dozen.
Louie has been very involved throughout the years assisting the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with various fisheries management projects ranging from regulations to habitat management to public access facilities. Louie played a key role in a project to install an aerator at Lake Tewaukon. He also led an effort to increase the walleye length limit on non-refuge lakes to 14 inches due to a concern over extensive harvest of small walleyes.
His efforts to improving sport fishing in southeast North Dakota have led to greatly improved fishing opportunities for anglers. His unselfish contributions over more than forty years have led to much greater opportunity for adults and children to experience the simple joy of fishing.
